The Fall line separates the Coastal Plain from the Piedmont region of Georgia. The line is about twenty miles wide a crosses the entire state. It gets it name from the numerous falls along the line. Three major cities, Macon, Augusta, and Columbus, all started out as mill towns located on the Fall Line.
The line is actually an ancient pre-historic shore line that shows where the oceans formed prior to the ice age. We know this because archeologist have discovered ancient plant and sea life fossils below this line. |
