Georgia's Regions
Piedmont
The Piedmont region is a hilly part of Georgia. Piedmont means "foot of the mountains". This region lies between the far northern mountains and the flat southern plains. This region is the most densely populated as well as the region that our school is located in. Visitors to this region will find Stone Mountain, the world's largest outcropping of granite, and Warm Springs, so named for the spring constant year round temperature of 88* F. It is located just north of the fall line and extends northwards to the Blue ridge and Valley and Ridge Regions. It is characterized by its "Red Georgia Clay" type soil and the fact that it has virtually no underground aquifer to hold any ground water. This fact requires the inhabitants of this region to rely on surface water collected primarily from runoff of the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains into the Chattahoochee River Basin. The river's flow is impeded by the Buford Dam causing the river to pool into Lake Lanier, the largest man made reservoir in the state.
